I went on the same days just about every week. The way I saw it, I'm a gay paying customer and I have every right to occupy that space. When I first moved to my new city, I would go to the bars by myself. I'm still in school so it's kind of easier to make friends, but I met all my gay friends at a gay bar. I moved to a different part of the country almost two years ago and knew virtually no one. You'll find that the more you put yourself out there, the easier it gets. (Which is partially why the alcohol is there in the first place). And, plot twist - they're likely just as nervous to talk to you as well. Even though you might be nervous, you ultimately just want to chat with people and so does everyone else at the bar. Push yourself past your comfort zone, do things you might not normally do, be more social than you normally would. I've made great friends with bartenders all over the world who I get to see and catch up with once or twice a year.įinally, and most importantly - just put yourself out there. And if you were traveling, you now have a friend that you can always drop in to see anytime you're back in that city. If it's where you live and you make it a regular bar you go to, you now have a regular friend. It's easier to enter an existing conversation than start a new one from scratch.Īnd plus, even if you don't meet anyone else, you'll have met and possibly befriended a bartender. Hey margarita guy - how was that museum?")Īnother benefit of chatting with the bartender is that others are much more likely to talk to you if they see you're already friendly and conversational. (IE "Oh, you're visiting for the weekend and curious about the modern art museum? That guy having the margarita over there just visited it today. Not only that, but they're also great at bringing together strangers sitting at the bar and facilitating a conversation between them.

Bartenders are phenomenal conversationalists (as it's basically part of their job description) and will often strike up a conversation with you and know how to keep it going. The latter is often filled with groups of friends who are on their own nights out, celebrating something, etc, while the former is more likely to have other solo people who are also eager/open to start a conversation with a stranger. My first piece of advice would be, if you're anxious about meeting people, go to a place that's more "bar where gay men are drinking and conversing" than "bar/club where gay men are partying and dancing". They're a great hub for solo travelers - any city im in, I know I can go to the local gay bar and have some sense of familiarity.

I travel by myself a lot (actually, I'm writing this from a plane on my way to Amsterdam) and I always go to the gay bars in whatever city I'm in.
